Route Instructions and Cover Sheet
December 12 - 14, 1997

Welcome to the 27th annual running of Starlite. We hope that you enjoy the event we have planned and complete it safely. These route instructions consist of 11 pages of instructions, and 10 map pages. Please be sure you have all pages necessary.

The Rallyemasters Critique of the Course is also available.

Basic Rules of Rallying

For additional information regardng the rules of Monte Carlo Rallying see General Instructions on the Starlite page.

Safety on the Rallye

As you drive this rallye, please remember that rallye cars are not the only ones on the road. When creeping into an Inmarker, stay as far to the right as possible and do not block normal road traffic. If a faster car overtakes you, especially on a winding road, allow it to pass safely. If you are the faster car, wait for a safe opportunity to pass, and don't blind those in front of you with high-powered headlamps.

We have written this rallye to be as safe as reasonably possible. If you find yourself nodding off - stop and take a short break. For navigators, it is tempting to take a nap on the long transits, but it is also your job to keep your driver alert. Remember, your safety while driving is up to you and your own common sense.

A rallye is NOT something to risk life and limb over, yours or anyone else's. A final point of courtesy - please use your low beams and not driving lights when coming into Standoffs and Inmarkers. This will help both our workers, and other rallyists trying to find a flashing light in the darkness.

Mileages

For this event it is important that you watch your mileages carefully. Some of the roads you will be required to travel on may be unnamed at the intersections or may have different names than indicated on the map (we generally use the map names), and some are hard to find (imagine that!). You must take mileage references and then use the mileages and/or scale shown on the maps to accurately find the proper roads to turn on during this event.

All mileages provided in the route instructions and handouts are given in statute (driving distance) miles, unless otherwise indicated. They’re based on the Rallyemaster’s measurements and have been corrected for odometer error as best as possible.

Timing

All of the True Times were derived by driving the course at or below posted speed limits, depending on road conditions, and always at a safe speed. In addition:

* 2.00 minutes have been allotted at each Standoff except Standoff #1.
* 4.00 minutes have been allotted at Standoff #1.
* 1.00 minute has been allotted at each Inmarker to get your time slip and turn in any Course Control information.
* No time has been allotted at Course Controls as most are readily visible from the roadway when traveling on the preferred route.

Course Controls

Course Controls may be MANNED or UNMANNED. If MANNED, stop and have your Control Card signed by a rallye worker. If UNMANNED, enter the information in the appropriate Course Control box on your Control Card and also report the information to the course worker at the appropriate INMARKER. You may enter and leave Course Controls in any direction, unless otherwise stated in the route instructions.

Unless otherwise indicated, you will incur a 2.00 minute penalty for each Course Control missed. Missing a Control includes providing an incorrect answer for an UNMANNED control. The penalty will be assessed on the leg on which you must report the information. If a Course Control is listed as not applying to your class, then it DOES NOT EXIST for you, and you will not be assessed a penalty for either missing it or passing through it. If you encounter a MANNED Course Control and you are not sure if it applies to your class, stop and check in.

Standoffs

You are required to stop and check in at each STANDOFF. Hand the STANDOFF worker your Control Card so that it can be initialed and your arrival time recorded on the log. Please observe a 15 MPH speed limit in the Standoff area for safety.

Additional information may be available at Standoffs. It is up to you to ask for and obtain it. Some classes may encounter some Standoffs or Course Controls more than once. You are required to check in with the course workers each time you encounter any manned Course Control. You are reminded to drive carefully in Standoff and Inmarker areas at all times.

Inmarkers

You are required to stop at each Inmarker (checkpoint). 1.00 minute has been allotted at each Inmarker to get your timing slip. Please do not interfere with another contestant's in-time. If a checkpoint worker determines that you have interfered with another contestant's valid in-time, you will be penalized. This penalty could result in your disqualification.

Addendum

For this rallye, an Inmarker area is defined as the area on the Inmarker road (the road where the timing box is located) between the two paved roads on either side of the Inmarker (upcourse and downcourse of the Inmarker). Expert class cars only may pass through inmarkers backwards without penalty after first entering them in the correct direction. If you choose to do so, please do not interfere with other contestants creeping towards the timing hose.

Leg interval times ("Delta" times) have been calculated for you, and are listed following each leg’s TRUE TIME.

We hope you enjoy this event and we look forward to talking with you in Las Vegas!
